KHJ was built 1n 1922 by Charles. R. Kierulff who owned and operated the station for the Los Angeles Times. Kierulff was in the "electronics" business of the day. Charlie's older brother started B. F. Kierulff and Co. in 1903 selling telephone and telegraph equipment in Los Angeles.
The station went on the air in April, 1922.
Everything was live, as tape recording devices had yet to be invented. Singers arrived at the station and performed live. If the singer didn't show up, then the announcer was required to perform! The station also broadcast radio plays for children in the evenings.
The radio's call sign letters were an acronym for Kindness, Happiness, and Joy.
Famous people who've broadcast on the station include Eddie Carter and George Burns.
Patt Weaver, father of Sigourney Weaver, was an announcer on the station 1934.
When the FCC started requiring formal 4 letter callsigns, the closest callsign that the station was able to obtain was KKHJ. KHJJ was already in use by a station further north, in the San Joaquin Valley, which called itself KHJ. This was a problem for the station, because saying 'KK' in Spanish is an obscenity. After a petition was submitted by the station and local community members, the FCC made an exception to the 4 letter callsign rule, and the station resumed broadcasting as KHJ Los Angeles on March 15, 2000.
