Following a $ 600,000 "deal in principle" Thursday with Hyperion for a book about the recently captured Mitnick, New York agent John Brockman of Brockman Inc. flew to L.A. pursuing a film deal. The New York Times reporter John Markoff, who covered Mitnick's capture in North Carolina two weeks ago, is writing the book with Tsutomu Shimomura, the young computer whiz who matched wits with Mitnick and helped the FBI zero in on its prey. The option on "Cyberpunk," Markoff's previous work, written with Katie Hafner, about a less menacing Mitnick and his hacker friends, expired last December. Neither Brockman nor the book's Hyperion editor Rick Kot would comment.
