THUS SPAKE Tamas Bodoky <bodoky@hubi.abc.hu>:
#
# states. In my opinion these articles are worst than late communist
# Nepszabadsag was in the '80ties.

hmmm.

I think John Markov is really pretty good, as mainstream
newspaper/magazine journaliasts on this beat go.

# For futher info on Markoff's "objectivity" check this out :

The article is by Emmanuel Goldstein, editor of 2600 magazine.

There are kind of rival gangs here.

Goldstein is a leading figure in the Computer Underground, one group
with claim to the word "hacker". Goldstein's connections are closer
with groups like MOD ("masters of destruction", Phiber Optic's gang)
than with the next set of hackers. They probably only meet at
conferences like Computers, Freedom, and Privacy (CFP).

Markov is from the group I identified with Steven Levy's book Hackers,
and Glenn Tenney's Hackers Conference, which was an outgrowth of the
book. Well, Markov is not a leader in that group the way Goldstein is
in his, but he is an invited guest at the Hackers Conference -- one of
the few journalists they trust to attend. And he was on the
Cypherpunks mailing list until the volume got too much for him. BTW,
Cypherpunks have intersecetion with these hackers, which is where I
come in. Anyway, Markov know Tsutomu Shimomura from the hackers
conference, and he knew Mitnick, from being hacked, so that really puts
him in a position of really understanding the Mitnick situation better
than most.

So I think of Goldstein and Markov as rival publishsers, and
neither of them are perfect.

I haven't read Markov's book, so I can't speak on it. But I like
Markov's current writing in the NYT. I recognize that he has his
limitations in that forum. And he certainly doesn't write from the
point of view that I did in my last two postings here on this topic.

But I wouldn't say Markov sucks. Far from it, compared to most
journalists writing about this stuff.

(sorry to be posting so much about this, which is not really about
Hungary, but it is about Steve's column. i'll try to ease out of it now...)
