In any event, I was cleaning through my in basket and thought some of you might be interested in these IBM regional press releases. As long as we're back to a dozen messages a day, might as well vary the topics, anyway . THE WHOLLY-OWNED SUBSIDIARY OF IBM WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR MARKETING, SERVICE AND SUPPORT TO IBM CUSTOMERS IN CROATIA. IBM ALSO ANNOUNCED A COMMITMENT TO THE COMMUNITY BY EXTENDING ITS "ACADEMIC INITIATIVE": A LATEST TECHNOLOGY PARALLEL SCALEABLE UNIX SYSTEM, SP2, WILL BE PROVIDED AT NO CHARGE TO THE UNIVERSITY OF ZAGREB, TO BE USED VIA THE UNIVERSITY NETWORK FROM ALL CROATIA. The name IBM is not new in Croatia: leading Croatian organizations in banking, manufacturing and distribution as well as government agencies and hundreds of medium and small enterprises are users of IBM products. For decades however, circumstances did not allow for direct presence of IBM. Business for IBM has been conducted by local partner companies. The most recent was the IBM Alliance CTS, appointed in 1992 and which has now been transformed into IBM Croatia. "Customers in Croatia require expertise from the worldwide IBM operation", said Horst Breitenstein, General Manager of IBM Central Europe & Russia, "and by having a subsidiary in Croatia we bring a new dimension of IBM know-how: local services, from maintenance to the performance of turnkey projects". Ms. Dinka Kalinic has been named General Manager of IBM Croatia. Having held various management positions with IBM in the United States, she has been cooperating with CTS from the Vienna office and led CTS since end of 1993. "In all countries where IBM is present, we strive to bring world class Information Technology solutions to our customers, making their operations more competitive and, thus, contributing to the growth of the national economy.", said Dinka Kalinic. "This is also our goal in Croatia." IBM Croatia will have its headquarters in Zagreb and will have suboffices in Osijek, Rijeka and Split. It employs around 100 well trained and highly skilled staff. They will be complemented by more than 400 people working with Business Partners. More than 200 billboards in Zagreb and in several other cities carry the message "Good luck, Croatia" with the familiar blue rose, now popularly recognised throughout Central and Eastern Europe as IBM's way of greeting the countries where new subsidiaries are being established. This is being complemented by ads in newspapers and magazines and TV spots.
