Sender: owner-Hungary-Online-announce@hungary.yak.net Precedence: bulk Reply-To: Hungary-Online@hungary.yak.net Hello All - I'm happy to announce that we on the hungary-online list have passed our first crisis. As you know we went off the air for a while last month when our previous hosts, Odin Kft., had technical difficulties associated with moving offices. We then decided to seek another home. It didn't take long before we found one - Strick generously agreed to set us up on his Yak server. Strick also added some nice hacks, which I'd like to point out. At the bottom of each posting you'll notice a brief message telling you who sent the post, how to unsubscribe or get further help, and how to switch over to hungary-online-announce. You'll notice I'm sending this message from hungary-online-announce. That's obvious because the subject line includes "(HOL-A)", which Strick's software adds to my message. Regular messages get stamped "(HOL)". what is hungary-online-announce? -------------------------------- HOL-A is like a second channel. I'll be using it for two things: to distribute the Hungary Online newspaper column, and for postings like these, which talk about the nature of the list. Not everyone will want to follow HOL. It's just a given that some people don't have the time, or don't find the discussions relevent. On Internet you can easily get information overloaded - what with thousands of newsgroups and lists, with the World Wide Web and God knows what else. Sometimes I get a headache trying to keep up with it all. The Internet mailing list, or "list", is an imperfect mechanism. The great power of a list is that all the messages are sent out by email to each subscriber. That means just about anyone can take part, regardless of what kind of access you have - CompuServe, AOL, full Internet, or just plain email. This feature is also the list's great fault - you have to _deal_ with each message that comes across. You're under pressure to download, read, archive, or delete each message, regardless of importance. And I've been on some lists that generate as many as 30-40 messages per day! It piles up fast. The call is out for "more signal, less noise" - for filtered information. That's what I'm doing with my weekly column. And that's one reason we have HOL-A. The second purpose of HOL-A is to narrate HOL. That's what I'm doing right now. Perhaps in future I'll put together a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about this list. For the time being I'll be posting periodic observations. I've been on some lists that are like waterfalls of data. There's just so much coming across you can only hope to find one or two interesting postings and throw away the rest. Some lists are newsletters - one way distribution mechanisms. Other lists are cozy corners were a few friends meet and hash over familiar topics. I think of HOL as a wading pool, a training ground. I'm bringing together people who will play a part in Hungary's online life. Okay - go ahead and broaden that definition to Central Europe. I don't know exactly where this medium is heading, but one thing is clear: the online media have to do with individuals and small groups. The old electronic media - radio, TV, cable - are all about one source broadcasting to many. New media are all about many narrowcasting to many. That's about as far as I can take this thought. Now I've got to get across town for an appointment. Stay tuned to this channel for further developments. =steve= --- Steven Carlson Moderator/Publisher - hungary-online Critical Mass Media Inc.
