on the Ides of March, on the Old Chain Bridge in Budapest, amidst Drumroll
and Fanfare:

                       Lectori Salutem

Dear Reader who, in Hungary, the United States, or Western Europe, hear
the name 'Magyar Narancs' for the first time: our weekly was founded in
the autumn of 1989 and it is now, some five years later, on the 148th
anniversary of the opening of the first free press in Hungary that we
start publishing an Internet edition, thereby reaching, for the first time
among Hungarian newspapers, an audience broader in time and space. Every
week you may read a selection of our articles, primarily news, domestic
issues and politics, and the editor's choice for the "week's best". This
service is free, and can be subscribed to by sending an email-message to
'subs.narancs@hix.com'. A World Wide Web site is under construction, and
in a few weeks' time you may enjoy our paper not only by email, but also
in a pleasing graphical format. We wish to thank Hollosi Information eXchange
/HIX/ for their collaboration, an important step indeed, since by the
158th anniversary celebration of free press in Hungary we may well forget
what paper was meant to be.

                                        Andras B. Vagvolgyi

                                          Editor-in-Chief
                                          Magyar Narancs

and yo and behold! :) What this guy sez is actually true. You can get his
original announcement by dropping a line (more precisely, no line will do)
to narancs@hix.com, and you can learn more about HIX from help@hix.com.
Lest you get overly joyous: all this is in Hungarian :(((((. If you wish to
learn Hungarian, I suggest that you try

(a) being born Hungarian
(b) going to Hungary, living in Hungary for five years, marrying a Hungarian,
bringing forth on this earth a child who goes to a Hungarian kindergarten,
and learning from him (her) as it goes up. I can't think of shortcuts right
now.

Uhhh. I just thought this piece of news was of some independent interest.
(My own role in the story is wholly tangential, save that I happened to
conceive the idea, and happened to know both individuals -- Andras Vagvolgyi
and Jozsef Hollosi -- without whom none of this ever could've become etc.)

By the way, if you do wish to sponsor an English-language Orange, or know
one who would, do not fail to contact me, or Magyar Narancs directly! :)
