Dear Rick,

Last year we were in contact with regard to an article you wrote about the
INET/JENC Conference in Prague. This year you are welcome to write about
our JENC6 conference in Tel Aviv.

For more information, please contact me.

Kind regards,

Judith Kiers

----(Apologies if you receive this more than once)

You are kindly invited to attend the

Sixth Joint European Networking Conference (JENC6)

                Tel Aviv, May 15-18, 1995

The annual Joint European Networking Conference will take place at the Dan
Panorama Convention Center in Tel Aviv, Israel, from May 15-18, 1995.
This conference will bring together people involved in computer networking
for research and education from many different fields: industry,
government, research and education. It is being organised by TERENA
(Trans-European Research and Education Networking Association), the newly
formed association by the merger of RARE and EARN.

JENC6 Programme
The conference theme 'Bringing the World to the Desktop' is our metaphor
for two major changes under way. The first is the increasing penetration of
daily research/educational work and practices by networks and networking
technology. The second is the new set of requirements that desktop
networking implies for the underlying technology and the structures of
service provision. The programme reflects these changes as a matter of
course in the 'technical' sessions, in the 'policy' oriented sessions,
however, these upcoming changes will find a solid base for discussion.
The JENC conferences have a tradition of providing high quality technical
networking information on various levels. JENC6 is following this tradition
and is proud to present a technically high quality programme.
But there is more: In the 'policy' oriented sessions the Programme
Committee is providing a discussion platform for all those involved in
networking for the European community. The floor will be given to
Pan-European service providers, but also to the European Commission, who
will be presenting their role in European networking and the progress of
their Telematics programme.
Then, last but not least, the technologically emerging countries within
Europe, the Mediterranean area and the Middle East will be presenting their
views on networking and provide solutions specific to their environments.
Consequently we hope the programme offers a truly European view of the
networking community as a whole.

IPng Tutorial
Preceding the conference, on Sunday May 14, Steve Deering from Xerox Parc
in the U.S.A. will be giving a one day tutorial on IP Next Generation.
We are very pleased that Steve has agreed to instruct those with current
Internet Protocol knowledge on the latest IP developments.
In this high level tutorial, Steve will give training in IPng addressing
and routing architecture (unicast, multicast, support for mobile hosts,
dynamic selection of service providers, address allocation and
administration). He will also discuss IPng extensibility, IPng security,
support for real-time traffic flows and non-default qualities of service,
autoconfiguration and reconfiguration of IPng nodes ("plug-and-play"). The
day will finish with instruction on the effects of IPng on higher-layer
protocols and APIs and interoperation with, and transition from, the
current version of IP.
As the number of places for this tutorial is limited, we advise you to
register as soon as possible.

Network Technology Training Workshop
>From May 7-14 a Network Technology Training workshop will take place at the
campus of Tel Aviv University. The workshop will cover all aspects of
dial-up & TCP/IP connectivity, and, thus, it is ideally suited for regions
with little or no networking infrastructure. Participants will learn the
fundamentals of establishing and maintaining a TCP/IP network and becoming
part of the global Internet. Topics covered include IP addresses, routers,
name servers, network security, monitoring, network management, and all
aspects of networking over dial-up modems. The workshop is intended
primarily for participants from the
Middle East region, but applications from outside this area will be
accepted if places are available. There will be a limit of approximately 30
participants.
The workshop is being organised by TERENA with the support of the
Inter-University Computation Center (IIUCC) of Israel and is being
sponsored by the international Internet Society. TERENA provides free
registration to the conference for all workshop participants.

TERENA Working Groups
Preceding and during the conference the TERENA Working Group Meetings will
take place. During these meetings the various Working Groups will introduce
their current activities and discuss various high priority topics. The
following Working Groups will have their meetings, which are open to all
those who are interested:
- Wednesday, May 10, 14:00-18:00 WG-NOI (Network Operational Issues)
                                        (NJE Task Force )
- Thursday, May 11, 09:00-18:00 WG-NOI (Network Operational Issues)(General )
- Friday, May 12, 09:00-18:00 WG- QMN (Quality Management for Networking)

- Sunday, May 14, 09:00-18:00 WG-ISUS (Information Services & User Support)
- Sunday, May 14, 09:00-18:00 WG-NMA (Networked Multimedia Applications)

- Wednesday, May 17, 09:00-12:00 ATM Taskforce

Demonstrations
Besides presentations, the conference also offers demonstrations of various
projects and applications of networking services for the academic,
education and research community. The following demonstrations are being
planned:
1. A demonstration of LIRN, by Andrew Colleran, University College London,
Level-7 (UK) and Nils Meulemans, Service Telematique et Communication
University of Brussels, Belgium.
2. Social Science Information Gateway (SOSIG) by Nicky Ferguson and Debra
Hiom, University of Bristol, UK.
3. The main aspects of Construction of the Northern-Western Segment of
Russian University and Scientific Network by Vladimir Zaborovski, Andrey
Vasiliev, Yuir Shemanin, Alexander Shaposhnikov, Saint-Petersburg, Russian
Federation.
4. The Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Network (EREN) by David G.
Zawada, Advanced Computer Applications Center Argonne National Laboratory,
Argonne, Illinois 60439 USA.
5. Operation of IDRP in the JOIN pilot network by Dr. Guido Loeffler,
Westfaelische Wilhelms-Universitaet Muenster, Universitaetsrechenzentrum,
Einsteinstrasse 60, D-48149 Muenster, Germany.
6. UNIBEL: Network for Byelorussian Science and Education by Andrey Ivanov,
Sergei Kritsky, Alexander Kurbatsky, Rep. of Belarus.
7. I'M-Europe by Sanne Plichta, European Commission DG XIII/E, Luxembourg

In addition demonstrations may be expected from our (financial) contributors:
BEZEQ (The Israel Telecommunication Corp. Ltd.), Digital Equipment
Corporation, MCI, Netcom, Novell, Telecom PTT (Switzerland). We are
grateful for the support of these businesses as they make it possible to
provide the high-speed connections for the demonstrations and the terminal
access (from the Terminal Room) for all conference participants to Europe
and the U.S.A.

Conference Events
Traditionally the conference also provides an opportunity to share time
with friends and colleagues from all over the world. The Gala Dinner will
take place in an enchanting environment in the open air. Also a bus-trip to
Jerusalem has been included in the programme, as a visit to this ancient
city is a must for anyone visiting Israel. And of course we would like to
welcome you all at the Opening Reception.

Looking forward to an exciting and inspiring time, we hope to meet you in
person in Tel Aviv in May!

JENC6 Programme Committee.
