You say HIX started up a little more than five years ago - was that 1989 or 1990? Tibor Beke once mentioned it started because a few US-based Hungarian students were trying to figure out how to pay their US taxes. Do I have that right? I first came across HIX sometime in 92 or 93 - somewhere in CompuServe I guess. It was a bit surprising to me to find something so active and complex existed in Hungarian language. > May I ask in turn, why and how you started HOL? What are your plans? I originally decided to start this list to distribute my newspaper column on the Net. It was only an afterthought to leave the list open - to allow others to communicate. I then began to invite friends and associates in media, computers and so on that had some interest in Hungarian Internet, and in developing the Internet media. The value of HOL is in the people that use it, and the quality of info that goes out over the list. As far as media go, a "list" is a pretty poor mechanism. I would prefer to offer people a nice graphical Internet BBS or perhaps a Web system. However those options would be more expensive, and not all have fast enough net access to enjoy these media. Perhaps HOL will evolve in that direction. For now, however, the list serves its purpose remarkably well. Meanwhile I'm interested in these plans you mentioned: > Some of the actual directions are more interactivity (e.g. there is a > yet-unannounced online conference system, called ARENA), and more > English-language stuff. Could you tell us a little more about these things? What kind of English-language projects do you have in mind? (you might find some volunteers here). And what is ARENA - is this a Web-based chat system, or something else? I know you're busy, so thanks for your attention. =steve= --- Steven Carlson moderator/publisher - hungary-online Critical Mass Media Inc internet trainer, consultant [+361] 133-4647 in Budapest, Hungary carlson@odin.net ############# # This message to Hungary-Online@hungary.yak.net # was from carlson@odin.net (Steven Carlson) # # To unsubscribe, # send "unsubscribe" to # An announcement-only subscription (less volume) is available # at # Send mail to for more information, # or to if you need human assistance. #############
