That was before the era of Cyberia and its main road, the Information Superhighway... :-) > Meanwhile I'm interested in these plans you mentioned: > > > Some of the actual directions are more interactivity (e.g. there is a > > yet-unannounced online conference system, called ARENA), and more > > English-language stuff. > > Could you tell us a little more about these things? Although HIX will still encourage writing in Hungarian, because that is the only language spoken by all HIXers in those fourty-something countries, where we have readers, but it is time to please the English-speakers, too. That's why HIX is making the Hungary list available (and today it is more popular in HIX format, than it is in the Listserv format), we have English news in MOZAIK, and the HIXWEB starts in English. What's more? Well, I am listening to ideas. :-) ARENA is a chat-server, or more exactly a conference-server. It is not web-based, because the web-paradigm does not enable updates initiated by the server, which means you have to continuously click to follow the discussion. ARENA is similar to IRC, but it does not require a client piece, which many people do not have. The down-side is that there is no nice full-screen look and other client features. But in turn you can simply say "telnet hix.mit.edu", and you are connected. I also wrote a talk interface (so you may "talk arena@hix.mit.edu" as it would be a real person), but talk requires a lot more in network resources, so I am not sure I want to do that (hix.mit.edu does have ample bandwidth, but the participants may not). ARENA also enables setting up "supervised conferences" or "talk shows", in which only selected participants can talk and the rest of the audiance is listening. I hope we can find people whose conversation is interesting to watch. We have some candidates already, but again, ideas are more than welcome. > The value of HOL is in the people that use it, and the quality of info that > goes out over the list. Well, you know, HIX has more technology that it can use ;-) , which is a rare statement in Cyberspace, so I would be very interested to do something together when you are ready to step in to the future.
