Sender: owner-Hungary-Online@hungary.yak.net Precedence: bulk Reply-To: Hungary-Online@hungary.yak.net Tibor - I would have responded sooner, but I've been v e r y busy lately. I hate it when I have to let things slip. Anyway I must respond to a challenge ... > You know, Steve, finding out what HOL really is came as a sort of dis- > appointment (Tibor Beke hereby gets shot by Steve Carlson). Let's face > it, to a fair extent, regurgitation of items originating in US networks > and US media, re-cast via a US carrier (Steve Carlson kicks Tibor Beke's > already lifeless body :-). >bang!< Seriously - the best kind of criticism is often negative. Glad to see you're not pulling your punches. How should I respond? First of all, it's obvious that most of the Internet is still in the US. And since this is an English-speaking list it's obvious that's where we look for information. We use a US-based carrier to distribute the list because, frankly, the Yak server is reliable and has capacity. Sad, isn't it? > Anyway, when I first heard there was something called 'Hungary On-Line', > I really thought this was something on-line, something one can plug > into, find out the current weather or such vital info as the number of > Kentucky Fried Chickens in the country As far as I know there's still only one KFC, but we'll keep you posted ;) So you thought HOL was some kind of resource to plug into? In that sense the name Hungary Online is a bit of a joke. It invites you to think of America Online - which HOL is certainly not. But unless you have a couple million dollars of investment capital at hand we have to take a more bootstrap approach. Ironically some of the best info I get over the Net talks about 'what is the Internet?' That's a need I'm addressing here. I'm also trying to put people in contact with each other - to show what's already going on. It's also ironic that the largest Hungarian-language forum on Internet, HIX, operates in the United States. > As for non-western analogues of DATO: try Lajos Kossuth's Dunamenti > Koztarsasag. :) Okay - I don't think we're going to change the name immediately. =steve= --- Steven Carlson moderator/publisher - hungary-online Critical Mass Media Inc internet trainer, consultant [+361] 133-4647 in Budapest, Hungary carlson@odin.net ############# # This message to Hungary-Online@hungary.yak.net # was from carlson@odin.net (Steven Carlson) # # To unsubscribe, # send "unsubscribe" to # An announcement-only subscription (less volume) is available # at # Send mail to for more information, # or to if you need human assistance. #############
