More to the point, the majority of national groups use the adjective form, not the country's name (your example is not really fitting, 'european' not being a people). This indicates, not incidentally, that fellow countrymen from all over the world are included as well, not just the country - a particularly important aspect for Hungarians. For these reasons, 'hungarian' was the preferred choice back when the Hungarian newsgroup had originally been proposed (which then got changed to 'magyar' before the actual RFD/CFV). Since then we've got bit.listserv.hungary, too - one more reason not to take 'hungary' to avoid confusion! And many Americans seem to have trouble telling 'Hungary' apart from 'hungry', so the better sounding is dubious, too ;-(...
