I just had the unfortunate experience of trying to deposit a personal cheque in my USD account at the BB branch on Kirlay utca. Up to now everything was fine, for two years I had no problem. Until now, when I got my January statement. I had 25 USD taken off in addition to the customary 3 USD for a 170 USD cheque paid in at the end of December. Apparently, people here are not used to personal cheques and the teller filled in a "csekkvetel" form instead of the usual "csekkatvetel" form. When I complained, the reaction I got was the usual "group solidarity" treatment, in where they circled their wagons to ward off the attack (despite the fact that they were clearly in the wrong). I exhausted all possibilities, going as far as the group supervisor. When I pointed out the plain fact that the wrong form was filled out and that the bank was responsible, his simple reply was that the two forms were actually one and the same thing, despite the fact they are different in layout, etc. I'm just writing this to let people beware of "csekkvetel" and "csekkatvetel" and to ask the following questions: 1) does anyone know a good bank in Budapest to deposit USD cheques (amount varies between 100-200) where they don't charge exorbidant rates; 2) the HQ or a higher authority to complain concerning BB on Kirlay utca. I know this may sound a little boring but there hasn't been much on HOL lately. Is anyone out there?
